During a recent class board meeting, it was decided to establish a "Class of 1960 Memorial Scholarship" in honor of our classmates killed in action during the Viet Nam war - Donnie Lee Darrow, Alexander McIver Jr., William Marshall Roark and Martin Nelson Tull. The endowed scholarship will be provided to a prospective Midshipman who will benefit from a year of study at a prestigious prep school prior to entrance to the Naval Academy. The selection of recipients will be made by the Dean of Admissions of the Academy. I've communicated with the families of our lost classmates, and attached a copy of the letter sent to one of the families for your information. We will receive notice of the students selected for our scholarship, and I'll share the information with you as it is received. The funds for the $50,000 endowed scholarship came from our class surplus that developed as a result of the surplus in our ALITC account, a surplus in revenue from the sale of LINK, and discounts negotiated by our 50th reunion committee. A sizable surplus still remains, and we plan to use it to lower charges for our 55th Reunion.
The board also felt it appropriate to establish a "Policies and Procedures" supplement to the class charter to share with the class. The two items covered relate to (1)Notification of the death of classmates and their spouses ( which includes information on obituary submissions to Shipmate as well as instructions on arrangements for inurnment of ashes at the Naval Academy Columbarium), and (2) Privacy policies on class wide distribution lists.
Copies of these supplements are attached for your information.
I'd like to thank all those classmates who assisted in these efforts.
